Since I work full time, making Wednesday an active rest day prevents Monday
through Friday from becoming a death march.
-
Sometimes on Saturdays and Sundays, I will do Tuesday's rides because there is
no way to make 4 hours any better than a very long time on a trainer.
-
To prevent numbness:
Hands: I move my hands to a different position about once a minute.
Regardless of the position, I keep my wrists fairly straight and refrain from
putting pressure on nerves.
Crotch: At least once every 10 minutes, I stand up for about 15-30
seconds and I stop once every 30 minutes and take a 2 minute break.
-
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I get up at 4:30am, do the ride, a 30 minute
nap and then go to work. This works better for me than starting at say 6am and
not taking a nap.
-
I use an old team bike just for trainer rides:
- It has the same setup in terms of dimensions and equipment as my current road
bikes
- There is extra padding under the handlebar tape
- I use a fixed gear so I cannot coast. The magnetic resistance unit has a
cable that allows me to adjust resistance. I also have the rear brake pads set
so they rub against the rim.
- Armadillo tires last the
longest of any tire I have tried
