Every Who down in Who-ville
liked Freedom a lot...
But the Grinch, Who lived just east of Who-ville, did NOT!
|
The Grinch hated Freedom, Democracy, too.
Now, please don't ask why. No one quite knew.
It could be his head wasn't screwed on just right.
It could be a severe case of envy was his blight.
But I think that the most likely reason of all
May have been that his heart was four hundred sizes too small.
|
But whatever the reason, he stood there in the sand,
hating the Freedom that prevails in Who-land.
Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Worship,
Freedom from Want, and Freedom from Fear.
He hated these Freedoms, he boiled with rage.
What was worse, he watched Whos of Every Age,
of Every Color, and Every Denomination,
enjoy these Freedoms-WHAT AN ABOMINATION!
|
"I MUST find some way to steal Freedom away!" he snarled with a sneer.
"I MUST find some way to cause them Great Fear!"
The Grinch plotted, he schemed, he connived and he dreamed of a world without Freedom--
he knew just how to do it!
Find the source of the Freedom and fly a plane through it!
He got others to help him; they practiced, they trained.
Their goal was destruction and maximum pain.
The Grinch chuckled to himself as he thought his plan through.
"Now all the Whos down in who-ville will all cry BOO-HOO!"
|
The day of the Grinch's deadly plan had arrived.
And just as he had hoped, thousands of Whos lost their lives.
As he sat back and fiendishly put a hand to his ear,
he said, "Their tears and their wailing is a sound I MUST hear!"
As he craned to listen, he did hear a sound,
it started in low and soon began to resound.
But the sound wasn't defeat!
Why, this sound sounded FREE!
It COULDN'T be so!
But it WAS FREE! VERY FREE!
|
He stared down at Who-ville!
The Grinch popped his eyes!
Then he shook!
What he saw was a shocking surprise!
|
Every Who down in Who-ville, the big and the small,
Was singing! And standing so proud and so tall!
He HADN'T stolen Freedom; he stood empty-handed.
He thought of his planes and where they had landed.
These Whos were still FREE despite the destruction;
These Whos were still FREE and stood with conviction.
|
What the Grinch did not know about Freedom, you see,
is that Freedom is not something to steal, but to Be.
Freedom does not reside in a white house or tall building.
Freedom is a Passion and a Belief Unyielding.
Freedom lives in our hearts and it is something we share.
You see It in smiles and smell It in the air.
No, the Grinch did not steal Freedom, by far.
|
He just reminded the Whos how lucky they are.
